BA Olympic dove design to be released in April

Thursday, 19th January 2012

The company, one of the official sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics, announced on Wednesday that its aircraft would be repainted with a design created by Brighton’s own design specialist Pascal Anson to mark the 2012 games. Repainted aircraft will begin appearing in April and will retain the design through the rest of the year. BA also said that some aircraft would also feature “Olympic colours”.

Anson, who works at Kensington University as a design tutor, said that the dove idea was inspired by the view of aircraft approaching Gatwick airport from his home. He said he often had wondered weather the flying objects were in fact planes or if they were birds, which in turn became the basis for the dove design.

Despite big changes, British Airways has said that its fleet will retain key parts of the current markings through the process. This will include the trademark Chatham flag on the tail; the flag was named after the dockyard location in which the Royal navy once made all of its flags.

Tracey Emin, who has been commissioned to mentor Mr Anson on the design process, said that the new design would be exciting for all passengers flying on the repainted aircraft.
