Hong Kong Airlines orders $3.8 billion in Airbus A380s
Monday, 9th January 2012
The $3.8 billion (£2.5 billion) contract announced this week is welcomed news for the Toulouse-based jet maker, following a news of a possible derailing of the deal as a result of China’s refusal to comply with the European Union’s emissions trading scheme. Despite the fear, Hong Kong Airline’s corporate governance head, Kenneth Thong, said to reporters on Monday that the deal would be going through.
Analysts say HKA was likely given a discount on the substantial order, which it has placed as part of its ambitious plans for global expansion. According to Mr Thong, the aircraft will be used by the carrier to cater to the growing market for business services between Asia and points across Europe.
Thong said during a statement on Bloomberg television that his airline was preparing for the aftermath of the current economic crisis, adding that it would be an “exciting” time for business connections between Europe and Asia.
Airbus would not comment on the matter ahead of its official announcement scheduled for 17 January. The order comes alongside numerous A330s on order via HKA and pushes Airbus’ current aircraft delivery backlog to 188 planes.
