Huge increase in rail fares will force more on to UK roads
Thursday, 30th December 2010
The prices of rail tickets are to rise spectacularly next week. This will force even more people to turn to the roads, says a pressure group.
From Sunday, the price of a season ticket is to rise by 5.8 per cent. This is just an average figure, however, so some commuters will be ringing in the new year with even more painful fare increases.
Furthermore, a watchdog has claimed that plans to snow proof the UK’s rail network could result in an angry backlash by passengers. The pain doesn’t end there, either. From 2012, the average rise allowed on regulated fares is set to increase from the current one per cent above the retail prices index (RPI) to three per cent over RPI.
Mike Crowhurst, speaking on behalf of pressure group Railfuture, said the organization considers these price increases ‘hugely unfair’. Railfuture doubts whether drivers or air passengers will be hit by similar price hikes.
He continued, saying that UK rail fares are already amongst the most expensive in Europe. Railfutures questions how a move likely to drive more Brits on to the roads fits in with the government’s claims that it has a green agenda.
