Small bomb found in car parked at Belfast airport

Monday, 1st November 2010

A small explosive device has been found inside a car parked at Belfast International Airport. Police and army explosives disposal experts attended the airport to investigate the suspicious car, which had been left in the airport’s long-stay parking and was found at approximately 2.30pm on Saturday. The device was removed for further examination.

The incident did not cause disruption for any flights but some travellers, unable to reach their cars, had to stay overnight at local hotels. The security alert was called off at 2.00am on Sunday. Police called the device ‘viable’ and said a suspected flammable liquid was also discovered.

The incident is not thought to be connected to a series of bombs discovered on US-bound cargo flights in recent days. Police are looking into possible links to dissident republicans. On Friday, a 40kg bomb was discovered in Lurgan, County Armagh.

Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland said both of the devices were capable of causing injury and damage. He said they were left in public places and without regard to members of the public. He thanked the vigilance that led to discovery of both devices and prevented any serious harm being caused.
