Travellers warned about terrorist threat in Europe

Monday, 4th October 2010

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is warning of an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Europe. The FCO mentions countries like Germany and France. It has updated its advice for travel in Europe to an enhanced state of warning.

The FCO has been for some time warned there was a ‘general threat’. This has eben enhanced to a higher level of there being a ‘high threat’ of attacks in Europe by al-Qaeda. The US government meanwhile has raised its own warning level to say there is potential in Europe of unspecified attacks.

An FCO spokesperson said the countries of France and Germany are currently subject to a high threat of terrorist attack but other big countries are also at risk. The FCO has therefore upgraded its travel advice. The FCO’s website is now warning that locations frequently visited by foreign travellers and expatriates face the potential for ‘indiscriminate’ attacks.

The travel advice is based on input the FCO receives from many sources. This includes the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, security and intelligence networks, diplomatic reports, media reports, local intelligence and reports produced by embassies. Threat levels in the UK can be rated be as severely as ‘critical’. A ‘high threat’ level is the most serious the FCO records. Security sources are now warning that Europe could experience be attacks like the one in Mumbai in 2008.
