Passenger numbers down at BAA airports, hit Glasgow hardest
Thursday, 16th September 2010
Fewer travellers are flying via most of Britain’s major airports but Glasgow has seen the biggest drop in passenger volumes. The latest figures from BAA reveal passenger numbers at the airport operators six airports fell by an average of 3.2 per cent between September last year and August this year.
At Glasgow, passenger numbers were down by 9.9 per cent. Aberdeen was close behind, with a fall of eight per cent. Heathrow managed to give up only 0.8 per cent of its passenger numbers. Aberdeen, Glasgow, Heathrow, Stansted and Southampton airports are all run by BAA.
Stansted saw a fall in passengers of 7.4 per cent over this same period. Volumes were down 3.2 per cent at Southampton. Edinburgh recorded a drop of 3.6 per cent. BAA said its airports in Britain served 10.6 million passengers in August, a fall of only 0.6 per cent over the same month in the year earlier.
BAA said it had seen a substantial boost in confidence this year, with Heathrow Airport having its busiest August ever. As a result, passenger numbers overall across all of BAA’s airports were only down a fraction. A spokesman said the previous 12 months had been exceptional, in light of the ash crisis, but BAA had invested in operations and was now giving customers an improved experience.
