Council considers car parking at Leeds Bradford Airport
Monday, 13th September 2010
For 11 years, a car park with spaces for 2,200 vehicles has been operation without permission from the local council. Now, councillors say they are unlikely to give their approval for permanent planning permission for the car park. Members of the panel considering planning applications did, however, point out that there was a need in the short term to provide much-needed off-site parking near the airport.
Planning officers had recommended that no car parking be allowed on the land at all. The land is earmarked for employment use and therefore is in contravention of council planning policy. Councillors deferred the planning application in order to give planning officers a chance to discuss the matter with the applicant, Austin Hayes Ltd. Councillors are hoping giving short-term planning consent will be acceptable.
Councillor Neil Taggart, chairman of the panel, said that because of poor public transport, there remained a need for car parking. He added that at peak times in the summer months, the airport lacked sufficient parking capacity. Airborough Civic Societ, pointing to issues with area road congestions, objected to the planning application. Management at the airport, saying it could provide sufficient long-term parking at the airport, also objected to the application.
