Scottish MPs debate Edinburgh Airport drop-off fee

Thursday, 9th September 2010

Members of the Scottish Parliament will tomorrow evening debate Edinburgh Airport’s planned drop-off charge and members of the public are invited to attend. MSPs from all parties are expected to take part. Stewart Stevenson, the SNP Minister for Transport, should also be there.

The debate is being held after Lothians MSP Gavin Brown managed to generate support from across the political spectrum for opposition to the planned charge of one pound. Edinburgh Airport is reported to be sending a representative of its own to the debate, scheduled for 5pm at Holyrood.

Conservative MSP Gavin Brown launched his ‘Drop-off Rip Off’ petition online in July. Since then, more than 5,800 people have signed the petition. Since July, Mr Brown has manned stalls in the centre of Edinburgh to highlight the issue. He is calling for people to reject the £1 charge, which he says is ‘just plain mean’.

Kevin Brown, who recently took over as MD at Edinburgh Airport, insists that British Airport Authority fully intends to introduce the charge. Construction of the new drop-off area is continuing and is planned to launch next month.
