Dozens of cars destroyed by fire at Stansted car park
Thursday, 2nd September 2010
The long-term car parking facility at Stansted Airport was hit by a major fire. A total of 24 cars were destroyed in the incident at the busy London transport hub, leaving a nasty surprise for travellers returning home. A joint investigation into the fire is being carried out by the Police and the Fire Service in a bid to figure out what cause the fire that incinerated two dozen cars and left an unknown number of people with a major headache upon their return to the airport.
Based on initial reports, it appears the fire may have been started by an electrical fault in a car parked in the facility. The fire on Monday saw fire fighters battle a fierce blaze driven by strong winds. A large area around the car park was closed off as winds hit speeds as high as 50mph. The cost of damage to car park Zone C is thought to total around £250,000. A total of 25 firemen, including those from the airport’s own fire department, spent more than an hour containing the fire. Claiming on insurance could be an added headache as investigators struggle to determine which car exactly caused the fire. Stansted Airport is offering free transport home or discounted car hire for anybody affected by the incident.
