Unite supports BAA’s latest two-per-cent pay offer
Thursday, 19th August 2010
Unite says it has recommended to union members that they accept BAA’s latest offer. BAA offered to increase pay by two per cent and to pay a lump sum that will be at least £500. The union will now ballot the membership over the next few days. The results of the ballot should be available in about three weeks. Though members had earlier rejected BAA’s pay offer of 1.5 per cent, threatened strikes later this month were averted after BAA and Unite agreed a new pay offer on Monday.
The lump sum available to staff would be a profit-related bonus. BAA is guaranteeing the payout to be a minimum of £500. This could rise as high as £700 if BAA manages to hit its full-year earnings targets. If BAA can manage to attain 110 per cent of its earnings target, members could receive £900. This is the maximum available. BAA says the most recent offer is fair, given the continuing economic challenges faced by the aviation industry. The Unite union agrees this is a fair offer and says that following tough negotiations, it has delivered to members an offer that is double that originally offer by BAA. What is more, the latest offer comes without any strings attached.
