Campaigners want planning denied for Bristol Airport hotel

A group opposed to building a new hotel at Bristol Airport is urging for the planning application to be withdrawn. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) says if the hotel is built, it will harm the region’s natural environment and local businesses.

SBAE says the 250-room hotel is planned for the area that currently houses the airport’s long-stay car park and the car hire return areas. The campaigners say this area should be used to provide more parking and to preserve the green-belt areas that lie to the south of the airport. SBAE is therefore urging that the planning application be denied. SBAE also complains that the hotel will harm business at the area’s existing hotels, B&Bs and pubs.

North Somerset Council already gave planning permission for Bristol Airport that supports a 60-per-cent increase in passenger traffic by 2020. This planning cannot, however, be acted on before the Secretary of State decides if the government will allow development on the green areas or a major rise in emission of greenhouse gases.

A spokesperson from the SBAE says Bristol Airport already controls all of the parking and it is behaving without concern for local communities or the local environment. SBAE highlights the fact that the number of guest rooms planned for the hotel has gone up to 250, from the 120 that was initially agreed.
