Study shows one-third of Brits holidaying at home
Monday, 2nd August 2010
The cleverly-named ‘staycation’ is popular with Brits yet again this year, as a major percentage of UK holidaymakers say they will at least take their main holiday this summer in the UK. Personal finances is a big part of the reason many British tourists won’t be venturing abroad this year but several other factors also play roles.
Many Brits say they are worried about problems with tour companies, aviation interruptions and the European debt crisis. A study by CSMA Club shows 25 per cent of Brits will take more staycations this year than in 2009. A quarter of those surveyed said the main reason they plan to stay in the UK is their lack of money. More than one in ten of those surveyed said they are so concerned about economic instability in Europe that they are taking their holidays at home this year.
Six per cent of respondents fear more problems with volcanic ash. Seven per cent are worried about industrial action at airlines. The country being avoided by the most Brits is Greece, with 13 per cent saying they planned to stay away from the Hellenic nation because of the economic problems there. Considerable numbers of Brits also say they will stay away from Iceland, Russia, Romania and Turkey during this summer holiday.
