So much for cheap flights, what about the cost of parking?
Thursday, 22nd July 2010
John Robertson, MP for Glasgow North West, is calling for airports operator BAA to lower charges. He also wants to know when the firm will lose its tight grip on airports in Scotland. Mr Robertson has tabled a motion in the House of Commons lambasting airport parking charges he claims can easily outweigh the cost of an air ticket in the age of £1 flights.
Mr Robertson complained that the days of people having to scrimp and save to cover the cost of a flight abroad are behind us, only to be replaced by a modern age in which people are forced to save up just to pay for the cost of parking their cars. At Glasgow Airport, BAA recently launched a free drop-off zone west of the International Arrivals area but people who need to use parking face expensive charges.
Glasgow Airport has introduced a new charging structure for parking. The first 20 minutes in the short-stay car park cost £1. Longer stays in the airport’s car park can cost as much as £7.20 for three hours. At Edinburgh Airport, things only get worse. From October, drivers there will face a charge of £1 for collecting or dropping off passengers.
