Local community critical about LBIA consultations
Thursday, 24th June 2010
People living near Leeds Bradford International Airport are unhappy with how they were consulted over the airport’s effects on local communities and have called on airport bosses to improve relations with the airport’s neighbours. Local people, their representatives and a civic society all asked for the consultative process to be extended amidst concerns about noise, vehicle parking and private aircraft.
Locals voiced concern about a range of existing and potential issues arising out of plans for expanded business and facilities at the airport. Some complained about the noise created by light aircraft. Others are worried about the potential for increased noise at night from jet airliners resulting from LBIA’s plans to boost passenger traffic at the airport.
The biggest problem facing the community, apparently, is increased vehicular traffic. To support expanded flight services, the airport has applied for permission to build two more car parks at the Otley side of the airport. Horsforth councillor Brian Cleasby complained that the community cannot handle such an increase in road traffic. Despite the points raised by the public and councillors, LBIA refused to extend the consultative process and said it had already done everything possible to foster communication with, and awareness amongst, the public.
