Airport parking to benefit in UK airport profitability drive
Monday, 7th June 2010
In a broad statement linking profitability at UK airports with passenger experiences, Transport Minister Philip Hammond said that the quality of experience for passengers at airports in Britain will drive profitability for operators. Airport parking facilities are key components of the passenger experience, and the minister said cash rewards would be available for airports that boost standards in several areas, including parking.
Some recent studies have shown that properly-managed, efficiently-utilised commercial airliners can be more efficient in terms of greenhouse gas emissions than passenger cars. However, many environmentalists point to claims that rail travel is responsible for less CO2 than air travel over the same distance. Airport operators are likely to have to provide excellent, efficient parking services to help combat government policy expected to increasingly favour railways over airports and air travel.
Speaking about changes implemented in the Airport Economic Regulation Bill mentioned recently in the Queen’s Speech, the Transport Secretary thought airport operators would welcome the new policy. He said everybody would like a new regime under which the rewards for progress and improvement are real. The government will also provide financial incentives for improving security and for shortening the lengths of queues.
