More parking coming to Fargo airport

Monday, 31st May 2010

In a bid to address seasonal parking crunches, the Municipal Airport Authority has agreed to add 219 more long-term parking spaces at Hector International Airport. It is only one year since almost 400 spaces were added in the pay and rental parking lots.

Authorities are keen to address severe shortages of available parking space suffered at specific seasonal points in the year. At peak times, the 1,258-space long-term parking lot has had as few as eight empty spaces. The average number of vehicles parked overnight was up by more than a quarter in the year to April.

Construction work will commence in August and is expected to last about three months. Trees will be moved and some turfed areas will be paved over. However, the airport is rapidly becoming a victim of its own success. Many are calling for a comprehensive review of the options available to provide long-term solutions to the airport’s ongoing parking options.

The number of passengers using Hector International Airport has far exceeded projections made just a few years ago. A 2005 study performed to support terminal expansion forecast 368,000 passengers using the airport by 2020. Passenger numbers are already up nearly 16 per cent from a year ago. If the trend continues, the airport could see 370,000 passengers this year.
