Bristol Airport to gain thousands of new parking spaces

Thursday, 27th May 2010

A raft of improvements and facilities expansion will be implemented at Bristol Airport under new plans recently approved by the local council. Under the development plan approved by North Somerset Council, existing parking will be expanded and two new multi-storey parking buildings will provide another 3,850 spaces.

Some of the new facilities will sit on existing green-belt land and must therefore be granted further government approval before development can go ahead. North Somerset Council has, however, given its recommendation to the green-belt development as no suitable location for remote-park-and-ride facilities could be found outside the green belt.

The existing terminal building at Bristol Airport will be expanded by 10,300 square metres, more than doubling the existing floor space. The number of check-in desks will be expanded from 48 to 67 and the number of airport security machines will go up from seven to 12. The new development will allow the terminal to handle up to 33 aircraft at one time, up from the present number of 27.

The top floor of one of the new parking buildings will also serve as an interchange facility for buses and taxis. Other areas of airport infrastructure will be expanded, including administrative buildings, fuel depot facilities and transport access. The conditions of planning approval require developers to invest millions of pounds in a new link road, public transport enhancements, highway upgrades and noise abatement. When finished, the expansion should let the airport support ten million passengers per year.
