In a bizarre and macabre story that could have been straight out of a Hollywood movie, a mother and daughter are accused of trying to sneak the body of a dead relative onto a jet packed with holidaymakers.
The suspicions of airport employees at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport were aroused by the arrival of the motionless man in a wheelchair. He was wearing sunglasses and was slumped over on one side.
Wife Gitta Jarant and daughter Anke insisted 91-year-old Kurt 'Willi' Jarant had been alive when they arrived at the airport. However, airport employee Andrew Millea gives a different account.
Millea, who helped move Willi from the taxi that brought all three to the airport, says the fact that Willi was “ice cold” made it clear to him the man was dead. After pushing Willi’s wheelchair to the check-in queue, Millea alerted airport security.
The two women said Mr Jarant, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, always slept like that. Police suspect they were trying to avoid paying the expensive repatriation fees levied for carrying a body and arrested them on suspicion of failing to provide notification of death.
Not only have they missed their easyJet flight to Berlin, but the women, who live in Greater Manchester, now face criminal proceedings in the British courts.
