The Lufthansa strike was scheduled to last four days, but officials at the airline were quick to consent to new talks after it had begun. Good news for people, who are taking flights now. The decision to halt the strike was a joint choice by unions and the airline after they had spent two hours in labor court on Monday morning. A spokesperson for Lufthansa confirmed the news saying that the strike has been put on hold until March 8th, by which time they would have hopefully come to a deal.

The 4,000 strong crew have started the industrial action over what they see as a threat to their jobs by Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiaries in foreign countries. The pilots fear that their cheaper counterparts will replace them, a claim that the airline fervidly denies. They also requested for a pay rise of 6.4 per cent, and more say in what goes on with the airline. The pilots’ union would also like a guarantee that they will keep their jobs even after Lufthansa moves their passenger base budget airlines.

The pilots are not the only ones causing a squall in the airline industry at the minute after BA cabin crew voted in favour of strike action. French air traffic controllers also announced yesterday that they would be striking for four days staring on Tuesday. If you are flying in Europe in the next month, you may want to have a backup plan in case your flight is cancelled.
