Despite the city-state’s dubious financial position, Dubai, is to showcase and celebrate its latest architectural marvel, Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world.

The Burj Dubai, meaning the tower of Dubai in Arabic, is estimated to be 2625 ft tall. The total height of the building was kept a closely guarded secret until the unveiling function. The closest rival to the Burj is The Taipei 101 tower in Taipei in Taiwan. It rises a whopping 1667 feet above the Taipei tower.

The Burj claims to have broken some more world records in addition to being the tallest man made structure in the world. It claims to have the highest occupied floor as well as the largest number of stories in any building in the world. Also it now possesses the distinction of having the highest observation deck in the world, on its 124 floor. The structure is so huge that it even surpasses the existing largest man made structure on the planet, the highest television antenna in the world, located in North Dakota.

The architecture and engineering firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago is responsible for putting up this mammoth structure. Its structural engineer in charge of building the Burj Dubai, Bill Baker, said that this project had been an incredible learning experience. However they had no idea how high the tower was supposed to be.

The initial plans drawn up surpassed the Taipei Tower by only 33 feet. However, the developer of the Dubai Tower, Emaar properties, was confident that the tower could be built even higher.
