American Airlines triumphs at British Travel Awards

Considered by many as the most prestigious among the British travel awards, the 2009 British travel awards saw a US airline walk away with the top accolade on Sunday.
American Airlines trumped UK’s flagship carrier British Airways and other contenders to be named the Best Airline of the year.
In other categories, Avis Aurope was voted the best car hire company, and P&O Ferries took the best ferry company award.
There were a few upsets among the travel agents’ categories, with the Co-eprative Travel and Travellers World tipped as Britain’s best travel agencies. Thomas Cook, the travel giant was placed second on the ‘Large Travel; Retailer of the Year’ list.
Travellers World beat Prestbury Travel to claim the top spot on the Small Travel Retailer list for 2009.
Thomson was dubbed UK’s best tour operator. Cunard Line took the gong for the top cruise line, while Disney Cruise Line had to be content with being selected the best niche cruise line. Royal Caribbean, the owners of the behemoth Oasis of the Seas, bagged the ‘Supplier Sales team of the Year’ recognition.
