Aer Lingus cutting five routes from Belfast

Thursday, 10th September 2009

Routes cut from the airline’s Belfast base include Barcelona, Faro, Milan, Paris and Rome.

According to Aer Lingus comments, the move is part of its overall winter schedule reductions, which will mean 55 cabin crew layoffs in Dublin.

In the carrier’s winter schedule, a number of short haul services are being slashed, and the number of planes at its Dublin base will be reduced from 24 to 22.

New services are being introduced as well, however, with flights from Belfast to Tenerife and from Dublin to Fuerteventura and Tunisia being launched in October.

Aer Lingus noted that the 55 employees based in Dublin would be laid off at the end of this month when their contracts expire.

Staff were reportedly upset at how they were treated regarding the layoffs, saying they were informed by a text message from their bosses, according to the trade union Impact.

Christina Carney, an official with the union, said: “I have been speaking to these workers today and they are devastated.”

Carney commented that the staff had been dedicated employees of the airline, and that many of them were now facing an uncertain future, unsure of how they would meet their financial obligations.
