Checked bag fees rise on Ryanair

It will cost £100, on a one-way flight, for anyone who checks in two bags on arrival at the airport.

Ryanair announced the major increase in checked baggage charges this past week, indicating that it will apply to bookings made from 1 October. To check in one bag at the airport, having a maximum weight of 15kg, the fee will rise from £20 to £30. A second checked 15kg bag will cost £70. When booked online, in advance, the charges are reduced by half. Even then, however, the cost for a family of four each checking two bags on a holiday to the Mediterranean will end up paying £400 in baggage charges for the return.

Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said that the carrier was increasing the charges in order “to persuade passengers to travel with carry-on bags only.” He noted that currently, around 70 per cent of Ryanair’s passengers do not check bags.

From next month, the carrier is doing away with traditional airport check-in counters, and customer will be required to check-in online in advance, printing out their own boarding passes. Passengers with baggage to check will go the bag drop-off counter and those having a carry-on bag only will head to security and then on to their flight’s departure gate.

The airline noted: “All passengers can avoid these optional checked-in baggage fees by travelling with carry-on baggage only.”
