Responsible holidays guide published

In a joint initiative with the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO), ABTA has launched the Travelife Sustainability System (TSS) with the objective of ensuring that the tourism industry has a positive impact on travel destinations – including the reduction of poverty and the protection of the environment.

In a recent poll, 88 per cent of the Britons surveyed indicated that they would like to be able to access information on the impact of their holidays on local environments, and on the overall impact of foreign travel.

The new Travelife Collection will make it possible for UK holidaymakers to make more informed choices about accommodation during their travels – before booking.

Hotels across the world are audited by the system, and an award scheme has been introduced to help consumers make informed choices when booking their holidays.

Top performers receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze Travelife award. Tour operators are able to support the new scheme by featuring the achievements of accommodation providers on their websites and in their brochures, giving consumers additional information in planning their trips.

The Travelife Collection can now be viewed online, and shows hotels and the awards they have received based on meeting stringent sustainability and responsibility criteria.

Issues of sustainability are addressed with not only accommodation providers, but also with excursion and transportation providers as well.
