Jet2 opening base at East Midlands Airport
Monday, 31st August 2009
Late last week, low-cost carrier Jet2 announced that it would be opening a new base at the airport, located near Castle Donington, which will be its eighth base in the UK.
In the process, 250 jobs will be created, with recruitment focused on East Midlands-area residents. The airport will see as many as 130,000 additional passengers each year.
In May of 2010, flights will commence to seven destinations, including Corfu, Lanzarote, Sharm El Skeikh and Tenerife.
Jet2 will be joining a number of other no-frills airlines at East Midlands including bmi baby, easyJet and Ryanair.
John Forkin, who is the director of Marketing Derby, commented that the 10-year agreement would help firmly establish the airport's reputation as one of the UK’s fastest-growing facilities.
He said: “East Midlands Airport has an excellent track record in terms of freight transport but, over the past 10 years, it has developed real credibility as an international airport.”
Forkin added: “The fact that the airline has chosen it as its next base shows it has confidence in the area. The deal is very good news because it means two things – it guarantees continued growth at the airport and it could mean greater numbers of inbound tourists coming to visit the East Midlands and Derbyshire from other parts of Europe.”
