Breakfast only on short BA flights
Thursday, 30th July 2009
The carrier has said that the cost-cutting measure is expected to save as much as £22 million per year and to reduce waste as well.
On flights that last for less than two hours, and scheduled after 10:00am, passengers will find only snacks and drinks available. On flights scheduled earlier than 10:00am, breakfast will still be served, regardless of flight duration.
The new regulations will take effect on Monday, and comes at a time that the carrier is introducing other cost-saving measures as well, including part-time work and pay cuts for thousands of employees.
According to British Airways, it is making the changes in catering to reduce waste as well as costs after carefully reviewing customer expectations.
Its research has shown passengers report needing more substantial refreshment after 2.5 hours of flight time.
A spokesman for the airline noted: “When you fly with British Airways, the in-flight catering is top-class and, unlike some other airlines, it is free.”
He went on to say: “It is not unusual to make small changes to avoid waste and save money where it makes sense and it meets customers' changing tastes.”
