New low cost travel option on El Al
Thursday, 23rd July 2009
El Al, the Israeli airline, announced early this week that it would be launching a new class of travel next week. On flights to Europe, a new low-cost economy class choice will be available to passengers, and if the carrier finds sufficient demand for the service, it has said that it may expand the offering to longer-haul destinations, including the US and East Asia.
Budget carriers Air Berlin and EasyJet have both announced recently that they will soon launch services to Israel, a move that is expected to increase competition on routes connecting Europe and Israel, and is likely to have been a consideration in El Al’s decision.
Haim Romano, the CEO of El Al, said that basic low cost economy class ticket prices will be lower but passengers will have to purchase any additional services they desire, including food and beverages, entertainment and checked baggage.
Romero explained: “On EL Al planes we currently operate first class, business class and economy class, which is divided into sub-classes. But on all sub-classes we provide passengers with the same service, even if they paid less.”
He went on to say: “Our plan is to open on the planes another class, the low-cost economy.”
