Eastbourne Pier is up for sale

Thursday, 11th June 2009

Just weeks after the 300 metre long pier on Eastbourne’s seafront was upgraded by English Heritage to a Grade II* listed building, it has been put up for sale. Current owners Six Piers Ltd who have only owned the pier since 2006 have handed the sale over to Humberts Leisure who is inviting offers in the region of £5.5 million.

The structure which cost £13,400 to originally build back in 1870 was designed by the same man who did Brighton’s West Pier, Eugenius Birch. The lot will include an amusement arcade, two bars, a tea room and a nightclub.

“Eastbourne Pier presents a fantastic opportunity for any investor with a passion for the British tourist industry and it is one of Eastbourne's finest attractions,” said Susan Morris, of Eastbourne Borough Council. “One of only a few remaining Victorian piers, it is an iconic landmark on the south coast and popular with the visitors that come to the resort every year,” she added.

Eastbourne claims to be one of the sunniest places in the UK and is a popular destination for holidaying Brits attracting around four million tourists each year. More recently it has become part of the South Downs National Park.
