Brits not daunted by challenging destinations

Long-haul travel experts Hayes & Jarvis have revealed some surprising statistics in the face of the ongoing economic downturn, by reporting that British holidaymakers are flocking to faraway shores for their 2009 holidays.

Hayes & Jarvis are enjoying an increase of bookings that are up 50 per cent in countries that have recently hit the headlines for negative reasons, including Thailand and Kenya. The travel company admits that travellers are making the most of the cheaper deals that are available at short notice.

Last year’s riots in Kenya lead to speculation of a fall in tourist numbers for 2009 but the popular African hotspot has defied all odds and is top of the list for travelling Britons. “Kenya stands out as the best seller, bouncing back well from the riots that damaged its tourism prospects in 2008, but Sri Lanka and Thailand are also selling very strongly with sales up by more than 50 per cent in recent weeks”, said Niel Alobaidi, Hayes & Jarvis Head of Commercial.

The company has put the unusual findings down to the lure of heavily discounted holidays making it a great time to visit a far-flung destination many may normally not be able to afford. Niel Alobaidi goes on to say: “Tactical discounting by hoteliers keen to attract business has helped to make them unbeatable value at the moment”.
