Campaigners to challenge Heathrow plan in court
Monday, 13th April 2009
Greenpeace, WWF-UK, councils and area residents – representing several million people – have joined forces to launch a legal challenge that, if successful, could see the approval for constructing a third runway at Heathrow set aside.
A total of 13 organisations have established a coalition to fight the government-approved expansion at the airport, claiming that the consultation process on the third runway at Heathrow was flawed. It also has called the government’s decision to approve the expansion "irrational".
The coalition has asserted that further expansion of the airport would mean that the UK would risk breaching air and noise pollution limits, undermine its own climate change targets and that the increased capacity would be unlikely to offer any real economic benefit.
If the challenge is successful, it would mean that the government’s go-ahead for constructing a third Heathrow runway would be quashed, and that a new consultation process would have to be conducted.
The 2M Group, which comprises 23 borough council representatives, has called a third runway at Heathrow "disastrous" for residents of the surrounding area and those who live under the flight path.
