Concerns over online travel purchase security

Monday, 9th February 2009

Online travel consumers fear that purchasing travel on the Internet is a security risk, according to a new study conducted by RBS WorldPay, a leading payment solutions firm. Fifty-five per cent of those responding indicated that security was the most important factor in making a purchase online.

While small ticket purchases online did not raise security concern, 30 per cent said they felt more comfortable making their holiday bookings offline because of the amount of money involved.

The study also showed that problems with technology that arose part-way through the transaction process were cited as an issue by 26 per cent of online customers.

Although online travel companies may not view transaction procedures as contributing to the customer experience, 22 per cent of those polled said they wanted a faster solution for online payment.

When purchasing travel products offline, expectations were higher. Forty per cent said they would prefer a single device, such as a mobile phone, or one card, that would handle all payment transactions. The same percentage said they would find it easier if they could pay for everything with a card rather than cash.
