Chavs travel cheaper with Travel Republic
Thursday, 29th January 2009
The holiday company Travel Republic has been critical of an action travel operator that recently promoted "chav-free holidays".
Early in the week, Activities Abroad sent an email to the 24,000 travel consumers on its database, in which it listed two sets of names. The first list contained the names that, according to the travel company, their customers would likely find on an Activities Abroad holiday. Names on the list included Charles, Alice and Sarah.
The second list, it went on to say, contained the name of people they would not likely encounter on a holiday with Activities Abroad. Names on this list included Britney, Shannon and Dazza.
Travel Republic responded to this advertising by making an offer to those on the second list, saying that anyone with one of the “chav” names would be eligible for a 10 per cent discount on one of its holidays.
Paul Furner, Travel Republic’s managing director, said that the "anti-chav" stance of Activities Abroad was “offensive”.
“We actively encourage bookings from everyone, irrespective of their name and its perceived social standing,” the company executive said. “In fact we’re delighted to have 1600 Shannons, 1100 Courtneys, 600 Chantelles, 500 Kylies, 400 Tiffanys, 300 Candices and 200 Britneys on our database, and two Candices, a Chantelle and a Dazza among our staff.”
The 10 per cent discount will be available for the next two weeks.
