Dropping off passengers at airports more costly

Monday, 5th January 2009

Birmingham Airport has introduced a £1 charge for any motorist stopping outside the passenger terminal. The first hour at one of the airport’s long-stay car parks is free, but it means passengers dropped off at one of these facilities taking a bus to the terminal building.

Other airports in the UK allow a very brief drop-off time, while others are imposing high fees for using their car parks for this purpose.

London City Airport allows motorists to stop briefly for the purpose of discharging passengers, but charges £8 per hour for the use of its short-stay car park.

Norwich Airport allows for five minutes of free parking, with the next 10 minutes costing £1.50. One hour of parking costs £3, which is similar to the rate charged for parking in central London.

At Bristol Airport the first 10 minutes’ parking is free, but the cost for an hour is a steep £4.50. A spokesman for the airport commented that the restrictions and fees have been put in place to keep traffic flowing and drop-off points free of congestion.

Liverpool Airports offers a free 10 minutes of parking at its drop-off car park located opposite the passenger terminal, but charges £2 for each additional 10 minutes.
