Bristol on top ten places to visit list

Thursday, 1st January 2009

The city in England’s West Country was chosen over possibly more obvious choices such as neighbouring Bath, or Oxford or even Edinburgh, to be included in DK Eyewitness Travel Guides 'Top 10 Cities for 2009'.

It now finds itself in the company of international destinations such as Buenos Aires, Argentina and Cape Town, South Africa. The eclectic list also includes some lesser-known spots such as Vilnius, Lithuania and Gdansk, Poland.

Bristol, a relatively small city with a population of slightly more than 400,000, lacks a single trademark attraction, such as the Royal Crescent in Bath or Edinburgh Castle, but spokeswoman Anna Paynton of DK Eyewitness Travel Guides said that it had been selected because of its variety in character.

She noted: "Bristol is often overlooked in favour of its more picturesque neighbour Bath, which tends to get a lot more attention. The book says that if you haven't been to Bristol, though, you really should. The different pockets of the city have their individual charms and that's why we included it in DK's 2009 list. It's a great city and one which has undergone quite a few changes over the last few years."
