Rugby league star player Pat Weisner had a falling out with his club and decided on a fresh start.Weisner flew off to New Zealand and left his company car parked at the airport and a parking bill that eventually climbed to £1,400 parking by the time the club found out about it.
The player quit Britain after a hostile dispute with the Barrow Raiders about three months ago.
Weisner delivered his parting shot when he left the club’s Rover, only valued at around £700, in a Manchester Airport car park, where the £26.50 per day added up to a substantial sum after 54 days.
Officials of the Barrow club didn’t realize the car was parked at the airport until they received the keys in the post from Weisner.
Car park staff and police eventually found the Rover after searching through the 20,000 vehicles at Terminal Two’s short-stay car park. Charges had climbed to £1,432, but it’s been reported that officials at the facility have agreed to waive the charges.
Weisner, a utility back, previously played for Halifax, the Hull Kingston Rovers and the London Harlequins.
He went absent in May, claiming he had sustained a knee injury that would prevent him from performing at his prior level, and criticised Dave Clark, coach of the Barrow Raiders at the time. He retired to live with his girlfriend in New Zealand, where he planned to train as a policeman.
Weisner has been unavailable for comment.
Before leaving the UK he commented: “The club say I have let them down but I can assure the club I am disappointed in them. I could have stayed and taken the money when I would not have been 100 per cent.”
