Leeds Bradford Airport officials announced that the first phase of a major improvement scheme at the facility has begun.

Bridgepoint Capital, the private equity group which now owns the airport, has committed to spending £70 million transforming Leeds Bradford into a "premier league" facility.

One of the major objectives is to increase the number of passengers handled from three to five million annually by 2013, and to up the number of destinations served from the current 75 to 100.

The first phase is scheduled to be finished this autumn, and focuses on the airports car parks and the frontage of the terminal. Access for the bus and airport shuttles will be improved, a designated taxi zone will be added and the Yorkshire Executive Club car park will be relocated.

In the second phase there will be enhancements to the passenger drop-off and pick-up zone, renovation of the short-stay car parking facility and improvements to the pedestrian walkways.

The chief executive of the airport, John Parkin, said: "The growing importance and status of Leeds Bradford International Airport is an essential part of the economic vitality of the region.”

He added: "We are delighted that development has commenced and are very confident that these works will ensure the continued success of Leeds Bradford International Airport and provide the people of the region with an airport of which they can be proud."
