Parking rates at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas are about to increase up to 50 percent.

Nevada’s Clark County Department of Aviation is increasing parking fees on September 9, at the request of airlines who say that they are paying more than their share for the operation of the airport. Airport officials are attempting to eliminate a budget deficit in the parking and roadways category, which increased $7.4 million last year.

In 2007 the airport spent $43.3 million on parking and roadways, although its receipts were only $35.8 million, from parking and bus, limousine and taxi fees. The proposed increase in fees would be revenue growing to $46.4 million this year.

"We are not looking to gouge the resident here; we are looking to break even for the cost of operation," commented Rosemary Vassiliadis, who is the deputy director Clark County’s Aviation Department.

Parking fees will increase by 27 percent on average, with passengers using the valet section seeing the largest jump. Daily fees for valet parking will rise from $16 to $21.

Long-term parking, which is generally garage parking, will see an increase of $2 per day, from $12 to $14. Economy parking, which is provided at surface lots farther from the terminals, rises from $6 to $8 daily.

The increases in parking rates are the first at the airport since 2005.
