With changes hitting the airline industry almost daily, the Long Beach, California Airport has decided to delay plans to

"Calling our plans ‘a process’ is appropriate," commented Christine Edwards, the airport’s assistant manager. "Six months ago, I could give you a timeline on what we'd like to do. But the industry has changed so much during that time that our situation has changed, too. We're going to have to be more deliberate and careful, understanding what the airlines are going through."

Earlier in July, Edwards met with the city council to explain that the new parking facility would require as much as $65 million in bonds, but that the exact cost is not yet known, as the facility is still at a preliminary design phase.

The airport official also presented a plan to the city council that involves the renovation and expansion of the airport terminal. The expansion from 56,000 to 90,000 square feet, along with renovation work, would require an estimated $50 million to $65 million in bonds.

She noted that the terminal plans are not as pressing as the construction of the parking facility. Currently the airport utilizes 2,300 parking spaces on Boeing property, and the aircraft company is considering renovations on this property.

Airport officials are hopeful of keeping both development projects moving forward, despite current delays.
