Road access to Stansted could be improved in the future

Last week the government announced new plans for the London to Stansted Airport corridor. The government is aiming to speed up the rail and road capacity enhancements currently underway, improving transportation links to the airport and making it faster and easier than ever for travellers to drive themselves to the popular London Airport and take advantage of the great airport parking there.

The improved transportation links will be much needed if the airport receives permission to expand the number of passengers flying from Stansted. BAA has requested an increase to 35 million passengers per year by the year 2014.

Secretary of State for Transport Ruth Kelly said that she has asked the Highways Agency to think about the possibility of widening the M11 motorway. Although BAA has promised to fully fund projects which increase access to the airport from the M11 and A120 motorways, Kelly says these possibilities require investigation first.

She said: “I consider that the form of capacity improvements to the M11 in the period before 2030 requires further assessment and as a result I have asked the Highways Agency to carry out further work to look into this. This work will take account of the forecast growth in the region and ensure that, in seeking to exploit the region's economic opportunities, we do so in a socially and environmentally sustainable way, considering a range of ways to provide the additional capacity that is needed.”

Although the airport currently offers a range of parking possibilities, increased traffic may require the airport to expand their parking spaces in the future.
