Drivers now get just 5 minutes free at Norwich AirportFree parking at Norwich International airport received a blow this week as airport bosses cut the amount of time cars are allowed to spend in the free parking drop-off zone from 15 minutes down to five.
In order to justify the decision, airport bosses claimed that the price of long stay parking would decrease in the future.
The decision to cut the free short-stay parking time allowance came almost without warning for the first time last month. Parking company NCP operates the lot and surprised many customers with the sudden change in policy. Several customers found themselves paying £1.90 for spending just minutes in the same place they were once allowed to stop for a quarter of an hour.
Airport Managing Director, Richard Jenner intervened with NCP, who overturned the decision as a result, but the matter has come up once again, following a meeting of parking and airport bosses last week.
Once again, NCP will be charging passengers for time spent in the parking lot after the first five minutes. Those who stay between five and 15 minutes will be charged 50 pence. Those who stay longer will be charged £1.50.
According to Richard Jenner, the new system and fees are fair for everyone. He said: “We feel that is a fair result for everyone and I hope people will see this as a fair charge. Five minutes is the same period used by lots of other airports.
“We feel five minutes is ample time to drive in and offload and hopefully everyone will agree. Fifty pence is not an extortionate amount.”
On top of the £3 airport development fee, however, the new drop off parking fees mean that the cost of air travel in the UK just keeps adding up.
