A break down outside McDonald's Gatwick led to a huge fine

A woman who took her disabled father and her sister out to lunch at McDonald's received a bill for airport parking totaling £213. The group discovered that their car battery had run down after they finished their meal at the McDonald's outside Gatwick Airport.

Maria Maxworthy spent 45 minutes inside McDonald's eating with her 80 year old father, Henryk Chrzanowski, who was in a wheelchair at the time. The group fully intended to leave the area following their meal, however they were unable to start the car.

Together with her sister, Helen, Maria and Henryk waited a further hour in the parking lot for AA to arrive and fix their car.

Shortly after, Maria received a bill for £125. Because she felt the bill was unfair and didn’t pay, the fine jumped to £213. The 50-year-old Slough native is now facing an appearance in court for refusing to pay.

"I said we had broken down," she said.

The airport McDonald’s location recently brought in a policy allowing vehicles to park in the parking lot for a maximum of 45 minutes. The company recently discovered that travelers were leaving their cars in front of McDonald's when flying from Gatwick on vacation.
