New driverless pods to transport passengers efficiently to and from T5.

Heathrow Airport will introduce the driverless Personal Rapid Transit System in 2009 to the new Terminal Five (T5).

This system of low-energy, battery-powered pods will run along a guided path to pick up passengers and their baggage from a variety of pick-up points. Once a passenger chooses a destination, the central control system will locate a vehicle on that route, providing speedy service. Even empty vehicles will move toward areas with high passenger demand.

The average waiting time for a pod is about 12 seconds, and airport operator BAA says 95% of travellers will wait under one minute.

The vehicles travel at 25mph and produce no local emissions, making them an environmentally friendly choice.

Managing director of Heathrow Airport Mark Bullock said: 'This innovative system forms part of BAA's plan to transform Heathrow, improve the passenger experience and reduce the environmental impact of our operation through the development of cutting edge, green transport solutions.'

After a one-year trial at T5, BAA will decide whether or not to introduce the system to the rest of the airport.
