Heathrow Airport will soon be using new technology to help locate cars in airport parking facilities.New technology will soon be helping travelers find their cars at airport parking centers across the country. Residents returning to the UK will be guided straight to their car doors, thanks to new developments in technology being employed at airport parking facilities.
The technology was designed by Siemens and uses a central computer to locate cars. The vehicle is then displayed on a small, 32 inch, color screen for its owner.
The system will also help newly arriving vehicles quickly find the nearest available parking space, saving drivers time when they arrive at the airport. Illuminated arrows with show drivers where the nearest free bay is located as they enter the car park.
The system will identify the car's number plate and print out its registration and the nearest free space to park. A total of 35 infrared cameras will track the car in the park and provide the central computer with information about its location.
When an owner wishes to locate a car, they can enter its registration details into one of 16 car locater machines. The machine will identify the car on the color display. The machines will be located in Heathrow's Terminal 5 when it opens in March and on each level of the multi-story car park.
Representatives from Heathrow hope that the technology will not only save drivers time but will also contribute to the environment. By cutting down on the time it takes drivers to locate a free spot, the airport hopes to cut carbon emissions by 397 tons a year.
