A parking lot near Gatwick Airport was fined after not complying with regulations.A four-star airport hotel near Gatwick Airport has been fined £5,000 for unauthorized airport parking.
The owners of the Felbridge Hotel, New Century (East Grinstead) Ltd, on London Road, pleaded guilty to the charges. In addition to the fine, they also paid council court costs amounting to £780.
The hotel received its first notice in early February, when two enforcement notices were issued to the company regarding a car park which was unauthorized. The car park had been a point of concern with community members for some time.
Appeals to the Secretary of State were not granted and by March, the hotel was given a deadline. Parking on the space had to stop and within three months, the car park's surface had to be removed and returned to its natural state.
The hotel successfully stopped parking on the land in May; however work failed to start on the car park's surface. A reminder note was issued to the hotel manager. The hotel asked for an extension but this was declined by the Tandridge development control committee.
On June 7th, a delegation of officers from the council visited the site and remarked that work to comply with the court's ruling had not started. At that point, they decided to prosecute.
According to Stuart Noble, the general manager of the hotel, the fine is fair.
He said: "It was always our intention to remove the car park surface as part of the £7 million refurbishment of the hotel. But we couldn't do it in the time considered and it was environmentally better to do it in September and October."
