Humanist march on GatwickIn a seemingly all-too-American move, Gatwick airport is to have a detention centre on the premises to deal with illegal immigrants and suspected terrorists. The Brook House detention centre is due to open in 2008 and will have a capacity of 420 detainees.
The No Borders group of activists were out in numbers as 300 members marched and waved banners and handed out leaflets berating the human rights violations that such a detention centre would surely allow to take place. There were 120 Sussex police officers on hand to keep the crowd under control, and two arrests were made when protesters refused to give police their names and addresses, citing this is seen as anti-social behaviour. One man reportedly said a rude word to an officer while the other allegedly caused reason for worry by filming a policeman filming the protesters.
The march began in Crawley and continued down the A23 motorway to Gatwick International Airport. The group believes that the abolition of borders is the only way to stop this human suffering. BAA certainly does not share this view.
