Firearm slips through Spanish securityAirport authorities at Blackpool airport acted on an anonymous tip and searched a man's baggage that the tipster said would contain a firearm. The man in question was due to arrive on a Ryanair flight from the northwestern Spanish town of Girona and police were waiting for him and his checked luggage when he arrived in Blackpool.
The 39-year old man did in fact have an unregistered firearm in his suitcase, a blank-firing pistol with a box of blank rounds with it. A Lancashire Police spokesman said, 'A blank firing firearm and ammunition was recovered from baggage which had been in the hold. The man has been questioned by officers and released on police bail pending further enquiries.'
Police said they were certain enough that the gun was not meant to be used with any malicious intent or that I could be handed off to anyone else to let the man free on bail. The spokesman continued, 'At this stage officers are not treating the incident as terrorist related nor do we believe the gun was intended to be passed on to anyone else.'
Ryanair has said it is cooperating with police and their investigation and that it is not clear how the man got the gun through security check points in Spain.
