Heathrow dolls up with a make-overThe planned Heathrow East terminal is what will replace what is now known as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which will be torn down next year to clear space for the new project, which will cost £1.5 billion. The design end of the project is currently being handled by an internal team of six people at BAA, led by David Bartlett.
Besides the core group, BAA seeks a select group of architectural consultancies to aid in the project, some of which are already engaged in the planning of Terminal 5. The responsibilities each firm holds with the Terminal 5 project will likely carry over to the Heathrow East project. For example, customer-facing design will be performed by Priestman Goode, while the lighting will be designed and installed by Spiers and Major.
The new Heathrow East terminal will replace some seriously outdated branches of Heathrow Airport, which have stood since 1955. Once British Airways moves house over to the brand new Terminal 5 building in the spring of 2008, demolition will commence.
The Heathrow East terminal is hoped by BAA to 'match the main T5 building in terms of scale and ambiance, and equal or surpass it in terms of form and function,' though the number of 30 million passengers a year will remain the same as the old buildings.
