No more system crashes at US airports?A $15.3 million initiative to modernize the computer systems at the 104 busiest airports in the United States seems to have come too late for Los Angeles International Airport, after a computer crash last month stranded thousands of people at the customs checkpoint after passenger information could not be accessed by Customs officers.
It's no surprise then that Los Angeles was one of the first US airports to receive some new gear. 110 new laptops were delivered to the US Customs and Border protection in hopes that what happened last month would remain as but a bad memory.
"We recognize that having folks sit on airplanes for hours is not acceptable, so we have to look at new procedures ... to make sure it doesn't happen again," said Ken Ritchart, the technology commissioner for the US Customs and Border Protection.
He explained that on a positive note, the implementation of these measures was in fact still a full nine months ahead of planned, and by the time Santa comes to town, the entirely revamped system would be in place.
