London tube system not out of the woods yet

A sigh of relief was breathed when two of the three unions that operate London's underground tube system said that they would withdraw their plans to strike, leaving commuters free of worries about lines being shut down and being stranded and not being able to move freely around the metropolis.

But they're not out of the woods yet, even though the two unions of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association and Unite have reached a preliminary compromise, the RMT union says it will carry through with its plans to strike by shutting down the tube system for 72 hours starting Tuesday, with 2,300 staff members walking out of their jobs.

Lines affected by the RMT union's strike are: Waterloo & City, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, East London, District, Circle, Central and Bakerloo lines. The media has reported that these lines may not resume normal service until Friday at the earliest.
